We Are Free!

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
– Galatians 5:1 ESV

Every year I have a go-to Christmas song that I could listen on repeat the entire season. Sometimes it’s because I love the musicianship, sometimes it’s “just because,” but this year it’s because of a specific line in a specific version of a specific song: “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus/Joy to the World” by Folk Angel.

This song has been on our family’s Christmas playlist for 4 years, so I was surprised that it was this song that became my go-to song for the season. At the end of the mashup/medley/whatever you call it since they mixed two songs together, they added “we are free! / we are free! / we are free!” — though the lyrics don’t explicitly put any more punctuation, I want to add a bajillion extra exclamation points at the end of it because it’s how it sounds to me through the song (almost like an anthem), but anyway… thinking about the implications of the freedom that Jesus Christ came for brings happy tears to my eyes, especially this year, through this song.

Come, thou long expected Jesus / born to set thy people free
(and because he did…We are free!

I hope this song fills your heart like it has mine this advent season!

Come, thou long expected Jesus
Born to set thy people free
From our fears and sins release us
Let us find our rest in thee
Israel’s strength and consolation
Hope of all the earth thou art
Dear desire of every nation
Joy of every longing heart

Joy to the world
The Lord has come
Let Earth receive her King
Let Earth receive her King

Born thy people to deliver
Born a child and yet a King
Born to reign in us forever
Now thy gracious kingdom bring
By thine own eternal spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone
By thine all sufficient merit
Raise us to thy glorious throne

Joy to the world
The Lord has come
Let Earth receive her King
Let Earth receive her King

Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
Come, thou long expected Jesus
Born to set thy people free
We are free!
We are free!
We are free!
